Got to ride around in this today

Kinja'd!!!

And got to meet a cool dude in the process. Its really hard to explain what it is Im showing you. It’s a Land Cruiser, but it didn’t come out of a Toyota factory. Its old but new. its a farm truck and a home. Its an odd duck.

Its the Maltec troopy. It starts life as a 90-91 German hzj80 series Land Cruiser. Then the frame is stripped and cleaned and stretched. Its then fitted with body and hardware mounts for an 78 series troopy body. A new HZ NA diesel engine, hf151 5 speed manual and transfer case are installed. Then a turbo is added. The axles are rebuilt and refreshed as new, a sub tank installed and new suspension, wheels and tires added. Then it’s fitted with the aforementioned 78 series body and interior (brand new). Then the interior is fitting out including a poptop carbon roof, sink, stove, fridge, diesel water heater, etc etc. Its a lightweight (5800 lbs all in), coil sprung, dual locked, turbo diesel manual transmission home. Its something Toyota never made, but should have and as I mentioned before is 100% street legal and registerable (its also lhd).

Kinja'd!!!

p.s. it costs $142,000 USD. Yeah, thats a lot of money, but this is a lot of truck and don’t forget, its a brand new 25 year import. so no aged plastics and worn out components.

Worth it? That’s up to you. bear in mind that a built up 4x4 conversion van is going to run you about the same, but not be nearly as capable or world travel ready it might be worth considering.

Also had a great lunch and chat with Phil, of Land Cruiser Products.  really nice of him to reach out.  Always fun to be a part of this community.  very cool, very nice people.

That is bizarre and incredible and ludicrous and wonderful.  I would not buy it, but I can see how some people would, and I am glad that it exists.

It’s certainly an odd duck. A somewhat weird solution to an issue about lack of availability.

But as you say...even for those of us who can go and buy a brand new 78 Series Troopy straight off the lot....creating something like this from it would cost well north of a hundred grand.

yup, plus you solve some of the troopies problems like track width and ride quality.  He says it pulls strong all day long on the highway at 75 with the turbo kit.

Its not in my price range, but if I was inclined to sell my stuff and travel the world for a year, I would consider it.  It will still have a lot of residual value when you got home too.

I’m sure there can only be a handful in existence, right? It may even increase in value over the years, as it’s not likely anything similar would ever be made.

Very, very cool. It does have AC, right?

True. Forgot about that. However, the track width issue is sortable in the aftermarket down here.

$142,000 and 5800 pounds but no shower or toilet ===> utter failure

Nope...though how expensive it is depends on which fix you choose - extensions or new axle casing.

Funnily enough though...given the likely immi nent demise of the V6 and V8 motors that created this problem in the first place...how much longer will it be an issue?

As soon as I read the frame was stripped and stretched, I knew it was going to be super spendy. Just out of curiosity, is it imported here first then built or built then imported? I’m thinking built then imported as that probably is easier for getting the new body.

built in Germany then imported.
